September 2024

The Merchant Navy Day recognises a vital service of the Merchant Navy and is rooted in the role played by acknowledge the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy who in both World Wars faced routine perils that are experienced at sea. The history of the Merchant Navy Day dates back to year 2000 and commemorated every 3rd of September each year.

The Red Ensign flag flies high at Victory Green to remind us all of the importance of seafarers who still till this day leave their loved ones for months on end to work on ships that heavily contribute to global trade and national security. Whilst at sea, these seafarers are faced with hardships that most people ashore could never understand but they persevere regardless of the dangers of dangerous mountainous seas, maritime security threats and wellbeing related hardships they may face whilst at sea.

Today we honour the legacy of the merchant navy.
