The Falkland Islands welcomes jigger vessels for the ilex season. During this time, the Falkland Islands Maritime Authority (FIMA) conducts safety inspections to ensure that seafarers are not exposed to any health and safety concerns whilst working onboard. The vessels are inspected to verify their compliance with the Torremolinos International Convention for the Safety of Fishing Vessels and other applicable regulations. FIMA works closely with the Fisheries Department and the fishing industry to reinforce the messages about the requirements of legislation around standards of safety of crew and vessels. Owners and operators must also ensure their crews follow safe working practices and that all equipment on board is properly installed, maintained and operated. All stakeholders involved, particularly the seafarers should be recognised for their tireless efforts to improve living and working conditions onboard the jigger vessels.
