Welcome to the Falkland Islands Public Health Unit

The Public Health Unit was established in July 2019 as a dedicated resource focused upon prevention, following the publication and adoption of the Public Health Strategy 2019 – 2021 by ExCo in May 2019. Initially established with the Policy Directorate the Unit was transferred into the Department of Health and Social Services in July 2023. While we have made good progress there is always a lot of work to be done to firmly embed prevention.

So, if you are wondering what we do here is a quick overview and please click though our pages for resources and research and to find out how we can support you.

The Islands Plan 2022- 2026 commitment aims to develop an overall joint strategy for health and social services and it is within this context that the review of the initial Public Health Strategy 2019 – 2021 will be undertaken.

How we can support you

The Public Health Unit works across the Falkland Islands community with the public, private and voluntary sectors with an aim of assisting to support the health and wellbeing of the population through a partnership approach embedded in ways of working which are holistic and supportive.

We are a non-clinical unit and focused on prevention and can offer support around policy development, advice, bespoke workshops/presentations and 1-1 options across a range of health promotion and prevention areas related to nutrition and the food environment, physical activity, workplace wellbeing, stress management using mindfulness and smoking cessation to mention just a few.

We also produce a range of resources to assist settings with their own delivery of campaigns or awareness raising around health promotion and prevention.
