Marriage

Since the 29th April 2017 the Falkland Islands has recognised marriage and civil partnership for same sex couples.  The law was passed with overwhelming political and public support and the unions of same sex couples are now afforded the same status in law as unions between different sex couples.

On the 20th November 2017 the first same sex marriage took place at Christina Bay, a beautiful location situated near Cape Pembroke and within sight of the famous Pembroke Lighthouse.

The Falkland Islands recognises that all couples should have equal rights.  For this reason both marriage and civil partnership are available to all couples, whether same sex or different sex allowing couples to be able to express their love and commitment in the manner that they choose.

Registrar General’s 3 Months Licence

The majority of weddings are conducted under the authority of the Registrar General’s 3 month Licence.

A marriage under this authority may be solemnised by a Minister of Religion, a Registrar, the Registrar General or anybody, previously approved by the Registrar General, in the presence of the Registrar General.

What is the process?

To be married under the authority of the Registrar General’s 3 month licence, a party to the marriage will need to complete a Form 1 and Form 2 and submit them to the Registry Office in the Town Hall, Stanley, Falkland Islands.

There is a fee for this.

Once the Form 1 is submitted to the office of the Registrar General it will be displayed for a period of 21 days and thereafter, if there have been no caveats entered or no one who has authority has forbidden it, the Registrar General shall issue a Licence.  The Licence is valid for 3 months from the date the Notice is entered into the Marriage Notice Book (which will be the date it is submitted to the office).
