Every year on June 25, the world observes the Day of the Seafarer, recognizing the vital role seafarers play in global trade and connecting nations. This year, the focus turns to a critical issue affecting men and women at sea is harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seafarers, regardless of gender, deserve a safe and respectful working environment. Unfortunately, many continue to face harassment at sea. Experiences that threaten not only their physical safety but also their mental well-being and career progression. Such incidents can lead to feelings of isolation and depression, especially given the confined and remote nature of life aboard ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The maritime industry must act decisively to create safe, inclusive, and harassment-free workplaces. This means ensuring that every ship is a safe space for all crew members, where men and women can work together with dignity and mutual respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is leading the charge with a campaign that seeks to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
Raise awareness about the reality of harassment at sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Promote proactive industry action to implement zero-tolerance policies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Encourage reporting and accountability through safe and accessible channels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Equip seafarers with resources and support to navigate and combat harassment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
On this Day of the Seafarer, let us stand together to ensure that every voyage begins and ends in a safe, supportive, and harassment-free environment for all. Here in the Falkland Islands, today is an opportunity to also reflect upon the vital contributions of seafarers to our community.
